The Start of ONU's Thrift Club!

As I shared in a previous blog post, I recently started the Thrift Club on Ohio Northern University. After receiving approval from both Student Senate and the Student Planning Committee, I was excited to officially move forward with creating our Instagram page and organizing our first meeting

To promote our first meeting, I designed a graphic and poster for the event, which took place Nov. 7, last Thursday. I also sent out an email to the ONU Campus, outlining the goals of the club and providing details about the meeting time and location. As the date approached, I found myself feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness, wondering how many people would show up to the meeting. While I knew a few friends would attend in support and had received sine emails from those expressing interest, but I will still anxious about the attendance.

For the meeting, I prepared a quick slideshow to introduce the club, explain the membership requirements (a small fee) and, outline the events we have planned for both the fall and spring semesters. I also includes a slide highlighting our commitment to charity work and volunteer opportunities.

On the day of the meeting my Vice President and I arrived about ten minutes early. To my relief, one of my friends was already there, eagerly waiting for the meeting to begin. Soon after, more people started trickling in and, my anxiety began to ease. Then I remembered I was going to have to speak in front of everyone. By the time the meeting had officially started, the room was packed, with only a few empty chairs remaining.

We kicked off the meeting with introduction from both my Vice President and me, as well as the attendees. After walking through the slideshow, we opened the floor for questions. It was very encouraging to see that everyone who attended was genuinely interested in the club and eager to get involved. We also have several positions open the executive board and, I was thrilled to see multiple people approach us after the meeting, expressing interest in joining or helping out in other ways. This was a huge relief, as we desperately need creative minds and extra help to grow the club, as currently, it is just the two of us on the executive team.

Overall, I am so beyond excited to see this idea of mine come to life and begin hosting sustainable and community-focused events here on campus. If you're interested in getting involved and being apart of this club, be sure to follow us on Instagram @onuthriftclub to stay updated on all upcoming events and meetings!
